Some content warnings:
I'm not a filmmaker, but if this were made into a film, I'm assuming it'd end up PG-13.
I really appreciate authors and that they're seeking my advice. It's quite flattering! I love giving advice to writers and I've always felt like giving back to the community. That being said, I'm a little too busy to take on another writers' work and providing them meaningful feedback. Giving feedback on a book takes a lot of time, and as a father, husband, full-time teacher, and part-time writer, I barely have enough time to get to my own writing as it is.
I wish you all the best with your publication journey, though.
Please follow my TikTok or YouTube for helpful advice on creating your stories.
If you're really seeking feedback on your writing, these are a couple websites I used that were enormously helpful to me on my journey. On these sites you can read other writers' work and share your own. They're great and helpful communities.
I get this question quite a bit. First thing I'd always suggest is that you write from the heart. Write what you care about. If you're passionate about what you're writing about, it'll reflect in the writing.
If you're serious about getting published, just remember that even if your book doesn't get published, it's not a failure. It helped you learn and grow. Helped you express yourself. Take what you learned from the book, and write another. And keep writing.
Like getting an agent, this also was NOT easy.
Read about it on my blog: How I Got My Book Deal (marcjgregson.com)
Unfortunately, I am unable to refer you to any specific agent or publisher.
Researching literary agents and publishers takes a lot of work. If you are serious about getting traditionally published, though, here are a couple great websites for researching agents/publishers.
I just finished major edits on book two, Among Serpents, and am working on Downfall, the final book in the Above the Black trilogy.
It is currently planned for early 2025. The final book in the trilogy, Downfall, is planned for Spring 2026.
I love the Skylands. For now, the plan is a complete trilogy.
I get this question alot. Alas, no. I don't feel comfortable sharing my older work. I was still developing as a writer, and I'm afraid if you read any of them, it'd be like me feeding you undercooked turkey. Some of the books were not published for very good reasons. My writing ability has grown leaps and bounds since I first started.
Futhermore, there's a chance I may revisit them and bring them up to the level of my newer abilities.
For now, just know that I'm proud of them. They're part of my journey, and they're one of the reasons I'm in the position I am today.
